Removing corroded sheet metal screws

Post by nybor »

Hi All. I think I either got a response from Russ or Brett about this and I am VERY happy to have figured out a way to remove the SS screws without damaging the flooring.

My problem was I tried to remove a screw (blackened) and its head twisted right off. In fact there are about 14-16 (I'm not at the boat) screws holding down the 3 floor boards in the two cabins (one in the aft and two in the forward). Since it broke off I decided to try all of them and 9 of the heads sheared off!!!! (Probably whoever owned my boat tracked salt water onto the floors.

I took several before and after photos (too large to show you the details) and if anyone wants them and steps I used, just send me an email..

in fact for only $250 - if you send me your address within 15 minutes, I will include a RONCO Veggiematic Slicer, Dicer and Peeler as a bonus gift... supplies are limited...

Honest Dave's Emporium.

WAIT, I forgot to tell you that if you are a member of the phpBB Cat350 Intl. Assoc, there is a 100% DISCOUNT

ps. Don't bother purchasing counterclockwise rotating cobalt drill bits, screw extractors etc. (like I did!) Big waste of $$

Sigh. No takers on my BOGO free offer. Anyway, here is the tool I used very effectively to remove sheared off sheet metal screws in the interior (by the way the replacement screws are #8 1" length.

It is the middle size core bit from Harbor Freight - sorry not at the boat. After coring directly over the screw shaft, I tapped it with a screw driver and hammer lightly and then with pliers unscrewed the remains. I then infilled the small depression in the gel/fiberglass with sealant. I tried using epoxy but it chipped a thin piece of the gelcoat (?) so any sealant will work..

ps My warehouse is filled with Ronco products (I also have ACME items - seems Wiley has retired), FYI
