Removing Forestay

I have to replace my bow roller. In order to remove it, I will also have to remove the forestay. I know that I will have to ease the backstay but am unsure about the shrouds.
If anyone has done this before, can you walk me through it?
Thanks.

Hi Ken,

I just did the reverse, removed the back stay with the stick up. I took one of the halyards and attached it to a cleat, in your case a bow cleat, winch some tension onto it, loosen up the back stays (just a little), leave the shrouds alone and then loosen up the fore stay. You should be able to remove the pin from the fore stay and the roller furling.

Thanks Ralph. That sounds way too easy. I'm sure I can make it more difficult without even trying. :D

Ken,
After you ease the back stays, attach a spare halyard to the bow pulpit and see if you can get
the top of the mast forward to ease the pressure on the headstay. I would not put too much pressure on the bow pulpit. Maybe attach the halyard to the anchor roller, I assume that can take more pressure.
Just a thought that a stumbled upon when I was "summarizing" my boat this weekend in Florida and think that I might have to remove the Schaeffer furler drum since the head sail does not furl easy but I will wait until Nov. when I put the boat back in service.
Looking forward to see how you accomplished it.

Hans,

Thanks for the suggestion. I was planning on trying that.
My furler was not working right last year so I went up the mast to inspect the top of the unit. I was surprised to see 2 parts missing that keep the foil centered on the stay. The aluminum cap was being worn away by the headstay. I must not have been installed when the boat was commissioned. There's no way it could fall out.
That's probably not your problem, but if you can't find anything in the drum you might want to check the top.

Ken,
Thanks for your reply. I received a message from the Schaeffer service group about the head sail furler here it is:
Dear Mr. Grasman,

Thank you for contacting Mauri Pro Sailing.

There are many potential causes to this problem you are experiencing, but I will
list the most common checkpoints:

-) Drop the Genoa or Jib and try to furl/unfurl the unit. See if the problem is
still there.

-) Make sure you have good headstay tension. Too much sag on the headstay will
increase the friction along the foils over the wire.

-) Try to see or hear if there is something unusual in the drum bearings.

-) Rinse the unit with fresh water and apply some dry lubricant such as McLube.

-) Check the top swivel bearings and make sure is running freely.

Those are the typical simple points to check. If the furler is still hard to
turn without the sail on, then try to identify if it is due to the drum or the
foils. What I mean by the foils is that the foils section connectors roll over
the actual headstay and sometimes dirt or one of the strands of the wire gone
out of place or broken is causing the whole problem. This is a harder task since
disassembly of the foil is required, so I wouldn't go that way before checking
the above.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Rod Favela

Ken and all,
I am going to address this issue after Nov. 1 when I get back to Florida.
In August I have the second installment of "Boat Swap" . I will be in Kingston Ontario sailing David White's C350 for 2 weeks.Looking forward to that.
