Have you checked your water pump impeller recently?

Post by KenKrawford »

My boat is half way through its fourth season with 181 hrs on the engine. Lately I noticed that the engine temperature was creeping slightly over 180 degrees when motoring at 2700 RPM's. A friend suggested checking the water pump impeller. I was shocked to see that it was on the verge of self-destructing. I was able to get 5 or 6 years out of an impeller on my Catalina 34 and even those looked barely worn.
If you haven't check yours lately, take a look.

Ken-

That really doesn't surprise me at all. I've had impellers go out in about that many hours. It was no fun fishing blades out of the heat exchanger.

I check mine every year during winterization, and if it looks worn, feels stiff, or if the smallest crack appears at the base of any blade, a new one goes in. I also like to put a thin layer of vasoline or lanocote inside the pump at the end of the season so that the blades don't stick and break on first start the following spring.
