Air Filter Element

Post by zman18 »

Today while doing some preventive maintenance the removable foam air filter element fell apart while cleaning. At this point I'm wondering if its worth it to try and replace this flimsy filter or to replace the entire unit with a newer/better one. Has anyone replaced the entire unit and if so what did you use? Also if I just decide to replace the external foam element anyone know a good source to get one.
Thanks
John

Assuming you are talking about the foam filter that goes around the flame arrestor, you can pick this up from Lambs Marine in Ortega (Jacksonville), FL.

It is called a foam wrap. Coincidentally I had the same question. I found a generic wrap that replaces Kohler engine part #12-083-12 for under $3. It was the correct diameter for the M35B air cleaner but a little long. You can trim shorter if you like. I just installed as is.

I replaced mine with a K&N filter like the one shown below. Sorry I don't have the model number.

I like the idea of switching to a K&N filter.

Looking at the traditional replacement filter listed on the Catalina Direct website I found that the flange diameter is 1.75".

Looking up filters on the K&N website (by dimensions), I found the following filter (K&N RU-2450):

https://www.knfilters.com/search/produc ... od=RU-2450

which looks like the one Ken is using.

Dimensions:
  • Base Outside Length 4 in (102 mm)
Base Outside Width 3 in (76 mm)
    Filter Material Cotton Gauze
Flange Inside Diameter 1.75 in (44 mm)
Flange Length 0.625 in (16 mm)
Flange Offset 0.5 in (13 mm)
    Flange Type Offset
    Height 2.75 in (70 mm)
Top Outside Length 3.5 in (89 mm)
Top Outside Width 2.5 in (64 mm)
$37.99 on Amazon with Prime shipping.

Can anybody verify the flange diameter on the M35B?

I am, sadly, not near the boat.
