Alternator wire burned thru

Post by Fiftybucks »

There is a medium red wire on the back side of the alt that was hanging loose sparking.
Trouble getting the engine to turn over.
Good batteries. Good alt. Got it started by placing key in preheat and pushing start at same time.

Alternator removal exposed terrible raw water hose from pump to heat exchanger.

I’m having the yard fix alt connectors and replace the water hose.

The reason not posted in engine/trans segment is that we are trying to leave Titusville for Miami.
Lots more to come.

Curious as to which red wire this is and also how it affects engine start and run vs alternator and battery charging. Said another way, do you now where it should connect?

If connected to the battery, you are lucky there wasn't a dead short and fire!

Are you headed just to Miami or further destinations?

On the red wire. All are still connected. The red broke off at the ring lug on the main positive post.

After I got it started, the alt seemed to charge wonderfully I monitored the amps volts and percent of bank capacity.

I’ll get some pics come out

Found out the wire is called a spike arrestor. Not spark arrestor. It prevents a surge going thru the alt the could damage the components. It is a diode mid length and changes from black to red half way at the diode.

Wire end broke do to fatigue from vibration. No melting or darkened wire end or lug.
