Cutlass Bearing

Post by ElizabethG »

Hi All,

I received a text from the guy who cleans my bottom (the boat's, not mine), that the cutlass bearing is protruding about 1/2".

Naturally, dollars appeared dancing in my head, not sugar plums...

I searched the forum and I saw mentioned that that is normal for out boats. BTW, I did not notice any vibrations, or anything out of the normal on our last trip.

I know several of you have had your cutlass bearings replaced, so I wanted to confirm that the profusion is normal.

I'm sorry if this post sounds more like a bad case of hemorrhoids...

Yes, that's normal. No worries unless you find shaft play in it, side to side or up and down. The protrusion gives you something to grab onto to hopefully twist the old bearing out when replacing it.

Hi Scott,

You just made my day!!!

The diver said he felt no play in the shaft.

Thanks,

As an added bonus, here is a picture of my new bearing installed in July this year. With a one inch shaft you can figure out how far mine sticks out. Also a clear shot of the retaining grub screw when removing the old bearing as this is usually painted over.

My boat now has approximately 2500 engine hours . Until now the cutlass bearing is performing fine, no play.
To play save I like to have a new one on stock in case I need it.

What are the specifications of the cutlass bearing and where can I order it in the US?

Hans,

Though I have never purchased one, it looks like CatalinaDirect.com has them for $57 USD.
