Shower Drain Pump

Post by zman18 »

I’m having problems with the shower drain pump and wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts. This has not been right since we bought the boat used a few months ago. The previous owners never used the shower so it sat for 6 years with no use, which is most likely the root cause of the problems.
Now when used the water would pump out then flow back into the shower area. I thought this was caused by a problem with the vented loop and got a new one today. After installing it everything appeared to work fine for a while, then:
The float switch stopped turning off the pump. Also the pump will sometimes pump out the water and other times run but not pump any water. Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

The problem lies with the simple fact that the style of bilge pump that we have is NOT a positive displacement pump. That is to say the pump only throws water towards a port with enough pressure to make the water flow. The back flow is all of the water between the pump and the anti siphon valve falling back down into the sump. You can not get a dry sump with this arrangement.
To remedy the finicky-ness of the float switch, just raise it up about a quarter inch. Then when the water falls back into the sump, the pump won't retrigger, yet when the water gets high enough, it will.
Hope this helps.
