Advice on changing out the genoa furling line

The genoa furling line has some significant chafe so we think it's time for a new line. Would appreciate instructions/tips on swapping out the lines, especially as it relates to the furling drum.

This is very intuitive. Two things though, make sure you notice which way the line runs around the drum before you remove it, and allow half a dozen extra wraps around the drum when you sail is furled there in the slip. On a high wind day when your sail furls very tightly, you will need these extra wraps to furl it all the way. Piece of cake though.

Wally,

First, a question-- is the old furling line the correct length-- as determined by:

1. Do you have the proper number of turns/wraps on the furling drum. I like to have 3 turns of the sheet on the jib under "normal furling conditions". That way if furled under heavy load all the jib will still be furled. If more than 3-4 turns/wraps, there is a greater chance of too much line on the drum/overrides.

2. Is the tail the proper length to allow you to pull from a reasonable position to stow the jib without being over-long.

Answers to these will allow you to verify the correct length of the furling line or to add/subtract from the present length to determine new line length.

Pull out the jib. Measure length of present line and modify per above.

With jib out, remove the old line and install the forward end of the new line exactly as the old line came out. Reeve new line through lead blocks.

Lastly, insure that the furling drum/cage (the SS drum/cage) is oriented such that the line never contacts the drum/cage in either the full in or full out condition. If interference, loosen the two allen screws securing the drum (under it) and rotate the drum/cage.
