Semi-Circumnavigation

Post by nybor »

I know that title would generate some interest! I (with my friend) made the voyage from Merritt Island (near Cocoa) around the Horn of Africa.....? The Cape of Good Hope?...... ok ok, around Florida, ending up in Venice (not Italy).

The winds were too strong to go outside so we stayed in the ICW, but sailed an all-nighter after rounding.

FYI if you go that route, it is 41 bridges, not 40 or 42! Also, the Waterways Guide said that route was not recommended for boats with drafts greater than 4 feet. (4'6" on NYBOR). But, we made it, even when the depth sounder showed some 3+'s!!!! intermittently.

Staying inside was a good call, because on Tuesday of last week, a sailboat sunk in Hawks Channel.

I think the worst part was in the ICW near Ft. Lauderdale. The power boats LOVED to create waves to upset us slow-pokes. In fact one actually turned around to do it again! Oh well.
