Replace the Standing Rigging

Post by TBOT422 »

Has anyone replaced the standing rigging? The Catalina Owners Manual suggests the standing rigging be replaced every 5 years. Now that some of the 350s may be 10 years old, I was wondering if anyone has replaced the rigging.

Thanks

I suspect all would agree that standing rigging should be carefully checked each year from masthead to deck, with turnbuckles disassembled, cleaned and greased (I use Lanacote) and then the rig tuned. If kept clean, greased and tuned, standing rigging will last considerably longer than 5 years. Yes, if neglected, shrouds kinked, damaged in stepping the stick for winter storage, etc, THEN replacement is called for.

So, the 5 year recommendation may apply to "not well cared for" rigging and would also be a safe "legal" recommendation.
