Alternator Noise

My Nexus depth finder displays eratic readings when the alternator appears to be generating current. For example, the depth finder reads fine when sailing with the engine off. Turn on and run up the engine and the depth finder goes nuts. I think the noise is related alternator output. Anyone experience alternator noise problems? Any suggestions for a noise supressor?
