LED Cabin Lights

Post by KenKrawford »

I know there have been previous threads on replacing lights with LED bulbs but wondered if anyone has done the swap out recently and if the newer products offer any advantages over earlier generation LED's?

Ken-
It's been since 2015 since we installed our LED's, but we are very happy with them. They have the same color as the halogens and produce very little heat. I'm attaching a pdf of our order so you can refer to the part numbers if you wish. I believe we had two of the disk types left over from the multi-packs and I installed both of them in the lamp above the stove. As earlier posts have suggested, you will have to trim the legs on the disk bulbs to get them to insert easily.

Ken
Just replaced halogen bulbs in the overhead fixtures in the salon area. Did 6 in total. I had looked at these LEDs 2 years ago then found some improved LEDs recently. The difference was the increase in Lumens from 200 to 300. They are blue/white and much brighter than older 200 Lumen LEDs and also much brighter than the halogens. As we get older, brighter is better for us.
I did need to clip the legs on them. Go for the most Lumens you can find.

Checking the power usage after swapping them out was impressive. The halogens draw about 800mAmps each, x 6 = about 5 amp draw. The LEDs draw about 150mAmps x 6 = less than one Amp. So much better lighting and much less power too. I no longer feel like i need to go around turning off lights that the Admiral has left on.

Our recently installed solar panels have proved extremely useful too. After a 4 day stay at anchor in the San Juan Islands, we never ran the engine once even though we needed the hydronic heater on in the evenings and mornings to stay warm and to make domestic hot water every afternoon. NOTE that the heater draws as much as the fridge when its on.
The panels reliably produced about 70 Amp-Hours each day. During warmer summer days the fridge will use more juice but we won't need the heater, still I figure we need 85 Amp-hours a day in July and Aug here in the NW.

Thanks for the information Charlie. It appears that Amazon still carries the bulbs sold by Weanas but the other ones sold by Neon Mart no longer show in a search. Many of the same spec bulbs sold by other vendors don't have any reviews which makes me hesitate.
Kirk, where did you purchase the bulbs you described?
Thanks to both of you for your feedback.

Ken
I purchased them at a local marine store. I dont have the info on them at home but i believe i kept some records on the boat. I'll be on the boat this weekend and will get the info for you. I didn't buy them on-line like i do with most boat things because i wanted to try one first, I went back and bought the rest after the trial.
I do know they were about $7.50 each.

Kirk

BTW
Just received my PYI damper plate (RD-22AM-4). I plan to have a mechanic install it soon.

Thanks for the links Rooster. Do you like the color of the GRV disc bulbs for the overhead lights? The specs show as 2800-3200K which is warm white.
The Weanas for the side lights are listed as 6000 - 6500K which is pretty much pure white.

I couldn't be happier with both sets of lights. Color is easy on eyes. I had tried a couple and these were the ones we put through out.

Just replaced the side lights with these and the color is fantastic.

A nice pure white (no blue) for reading and plenty of brightness vs the 3W LED assemblies:

Used these for the disc lights (I replaced the switches at the same time and hard wired these). Getting the pins to line up may be an issue:

Again, nice halogen temp white light with no blue tint.

Hi Ken
Lots of good input on LED's, so not much more i can add. Maybe test one or two different types before you buy a 12 pack.

It all just keeps getting better.
