Re: Super Fast Windlass
the trick is to use momentary short bursts on the windlass switch as the anchor nears the anchor roller. This will allow you to slow it down and bring it in safely to stow the anchor those last few feet.

Re: Engine Alarm / Buzzer
The engine buzzer sounds on shutdown due to low oil pressure. That may take a few seconds after you pull the stop handle and the engine stops due to the fact there is still residual oil pressure at the pressure switchfor a short period after shutdown.

Installed the LED anchor light yesterday - it is a perfect replacement with a .1 amp draw - the old one was .8 amps.

Re: SWIM LADDER MODIFICATION:
I have been looking at the same thing on my 2005 - the design as it stands is very frustrating to use. My thought was to cut 2 steps off of the existing ladder so it would reach just to the top of the stern cockpit combing (when the ladder is in the up position) and adding 1 or 2 removable lifelines...

Re: Battery Replacement: AGM 200AH vs 245AH
I too replaced the 4D batteries with 6 volt golf carts. 4 Trojan T125's fit nicely in the same space as the 2 - 4D's but give you almost 100 more amp hours (important if you spend a lot of time at anchor). Other than wiring the 6 volts in series then combining them to make one house bank it is a sim...

Re: Fresh Water Check Valve
My pump was doing the same thing during the summer. (2005 Hull #363). It eventually went away on it's own but my guess it was caused by the pressure switch on the pump itself. I had no leaks either. You can replace just the pressure switch but I think mine was caused my a minute dirt particle or som...

Cabin window crazing
My main (fixed) cabin windows are starting to show extensive crazing - I am assuming from the sun even though on the West Coast we don't seem to get too much of that! Has anyone else experienced this? From past experience I know this will eventually happen over time but it seems to me that it is rat...

Hi Ken,
I am also interested in your material as I am getting frustrated with the fridge run times. Thanks in advance.

Re: Rusty Chains
West Marine makes a generic cap that will fit - I replaced one of my water caps this summer that went overboard due to chain failure. Since then I have removed all the chains so I am not tempted to rely on them. It's not if they will break - but when. None of my previous boats had the chain - you te...

Re: Schaefer furling drum
There are holes as well in the furler drum itself - probably hidden by your furling line. The Schaefer operating manual does recommend spraying high pressure fresh water into these holes after sailing as part of regular maintenance.

Re: How the heck do you remove the raw water pump?
I have not had to replace it yet (600 hours) but I did remove it when I changed the impeller. It is definately a metric size (as are most of the the bolt sizes on the engine itself) and you do have to use an open ended wrench to access the one bolt holding the water pump. Other than that I don't kno...

Re: Dutchman and Sail Cover
I had cutouts in the mainsail cover for the dutchman flaking lines on my last boat. If done properly very little water will get in - however I have not done it on this boat because IMO I still think it is better without the cutouts for both UV protection and water intrusion (some will leak onto the ...

Re: Depth of wing keel
When I hauled out for my survey I had the surveyor measure the draft from the normal water line to the bottom of the keel. It was closer to 5.0 ft than the 4.5 feet specified in the specifications (wing keel). I use 2 feet as an offset.

Re: Pump not running for galley faucet
There are individual shutoff valves for the water system under the cabin sole in the bilge area. If one of these valves was turned off it would prevent you from getting pressure water to that individual faucet. I believe there is one specifically for the galley.

Re: Stretch the season without worrying your pipes will freeze
Hi Geoff, I keep my 350 just north of you in Vancouver, BC. I have never drained the hot water tank in the winter (or the water tanks for that matter) and like you, I keep some heat on the boat in the winter with a portable heater. If you are worried about freezing you could add RV system antifreeze...

Engine compartment soundproofing
I am considering adding additional soundproofing insulation to the engine compartment as I find the engine noise to be very noisy underway when compared to previous boats I have owned. Has any one else done this?

Re: Heater installation
I would also look at installing a hydronic (hot water) heating system. I have an Espar D5 system on my Catalina 350 and it works very well - a much more even heat than forced air (I have used both). Also you have the option to have seperate control zones in each cabin if you wish or use it to heat y...

Check your secondary fuel filter mount
While doing my engine checks I noticed that my secondary engine fuel filter seemed to have fallen off its mount. On closer inspection I realized that the mount had broken away. It appears to be a modified "L" bracket and had cracked down the corner of the joint - probably due to engine vib...

Mine just started to flicker as well - sometimes it works fine and other times it is very dim. Must be a design flaw. I have hull #363 - 2005.
