Re: Flush water swirls but wont leave the bowl

Take a look at this write up I did from when I first got the boat in 2003. "Head Impeller Pin Replacement" https://catalina350.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=87#p87 I think you may have hit on the problem when you guessed that the impeller isn't turning with the shaft. I found at the time that...

Re: Fresh Water Tank System Venting

Our hull is #68 and it has fresh water tank venting as ZigZag describes above: Bow tank has a stainless vent cover very near the fill point in the anchor locker. Stern tank has a stainless vent cover on the stern, directly aft of the propane locker. We don't have the optional 3rd tank.

Re: Removing and Replacing Charles Battery Charger

Thanks Ken. So, sheet metal screws into the fiberglass?

Seems easy enough.......(He says sheepishly, knowing how these things turn out all too often).

Removing and Replacing Charles Battery Charger

(I've had April IV since new in 2003, hull #68, but haven't posted here in probably 10 years....but I do receive and read the daily roundup of messages) How do I remove the original Charles battery charger? I see 4 screws, but there have to be nuts inside the wall, doesn't there? I'm fearful that un...

Puget Sound Catalina Day Regatta Saturday June 30

If you're a Catalina Owner in Puget Sound and you haven't already signed up for the annual Catalina Day Regatta, time is not on your side. You've got very little time to get your registration in - probably by calling the contact name in the this link to register. You can register day of the race (Sa...

Re: Whisker Pole size

There is (or should be) a PVC wiring conduit inside the mast. I believe as long as you aren't too aggressive in your drilling you should be fine. In mounting that pole ring, you're only looking to drill a hole through the aluminum mast, not way into it. Then tap the hole for the appropriate sized sc...

Re: backing up

Our C350 backs up pretty much like any other sailboat that we've handled. No sailboat steers well until it's moving. The trick we find is to apply power enough to get the boat moving, shift to neutral and begin steering as needed. Apply additional power if/as needed, in short bursts. Don't be afraid...

Re: Why is my boat so slow under power?

Clean bottom and appropriate prop should push a C350 well over 6knots in reasonably calm conditions. You ask about tachometer calibration - folks will tell you that they are notoriously out of whack. You should be able to determine what the tach reads at "WOT" - without the engine in gear....

Re: Zincs

High John! Here's a couple of links to other discussions on zincs for our boats. http://www.catalina350.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=9 (includes a picture of the "prop cone zinc" that many/most owners use due to the very small amount of exposed shaft that you noted - also visible in...

Re: How thick is the main bulkhead?

I think you'll find that large curved bulkhead that separates the main salon from the head is a thick, heavy piece of fiberglass, covered by a thin layer of veneer. I remember a thread some time ago where an owner was not happy with some of the veneer pealing at a very visible seam. I've mounted a s...

Re: Tempoarary Shaft Zincs

Geoff - I can't believe that you found room for a shaft saver coupling in your drivetrain! When I had the Dripless Shaft Seal upgrade/warranty work accomplished - which was done at the same time that I replaced a bent shaft, the mechanic that did the work had a heck of a time just getting enough roo...

Re: PHRF rating

Did your "club" measurer actually utilize data and measurements about your boat and measurements from your sails to assign the 147 rating? I've got hung with a 144 (non-flying sails) right after the boat came out - not from a real measurer or based on data, just a "guess-timate" ...

Re: reinstalling the mast

Two thoughts: Don't forget that once you've retensioned the shrouds and stays that you will need to make sure that the engine/shaft are properly adjusted/aligned If possible, it would be cool if someone took some digital pictures of the top of the mast, the base of the mast, and the mast step on dec...

Re: mounting electronics on pod

Well, I've got an "old" C350 (they're not called Mk I's I guess....), but from the picture of the new MkII's on the website, I guess I'd have to agree that the pod and instruments mounted like that do seem like they'd get in the way of both the Fuel Shutoff/Engine Stop, and reading the com...

Bigger than 1"

I really think that the stanchions are larger than 1". When I bought the rail mount BBQ, I initially bought the smaller sized mounting hardware (for 7/8" - 1") and had to return it for the larger size (for 1 1/8" - 1 1/4") rails. That larger mount worked great. See http://ww...

Some sort of bench is part of the package?

I don't have that option, but from what I've seen in pictures and other postings, there's supposed to be some sort of bench that acts as a support toward the center of the boat, supporting the "loose" edge of the table.

Good Luck!

Bronze Shaft

My shaft was (note the past tense) bronze. A little "incident" with a log last Christmas enabled a change to stainless. I've read where some of the owners cut their zincs in half in order to fit in the very tight space available. I wouldn't go without the protection of a zinc on your shaft...
