Re: Not Seeing a Charge

Hi Ed, I'm not sure I understand your question... The tack receives its power from a red wire (positive) and a black wire (negative) found within the instrument pedestal. The alternator provides a signal to the tach. Your tach should have a direct connection to your alternator. Double check, but I t...

Re: Not Seeing a Charge

Hi Ed,

Yes, you will need the exciter wire/terminal.

I may be wrong, but that is what "turns on" the alternator when spinning.

Without it, the alternator will not charge your system and your tach will not work.

Re: Not Seeing a Charge

Ed, Here is the service manual for the M35B which includes testing your alternator; https://www.westerbeke.com/technical%20manual/200554_m-25xpb_m35b_m40b_technical_man.pdf There were two types used by Catalina; Mando on page 72 and Prestolite on page 82. Before I upgraded to a larger alternator, I ...

Hurth ZF Transmission Video of How They Work

Hi All,

Here is a pretty good video of how our Hurth ZF transmissions work; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tooPyV-cNAc

Please note that the specific model number is not know.

The video runs for a little over 27 mins.

Damper Plate Replacement Notes / Procedure

Hi Gang, There have been several posts on the damper plate replacement over the years. Jerry Ross put this out back in 2012; http://www.catalina350.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=685 Does anyone have additional notes, instructions, procedures, hacks they can share? I may attempt to do the repla...

Re: Circuit Breakers

Hi Dave, I'm a little confused as to how you are testing... I'm not at my boat, so I'm working off memory here.. One side of the DC breaker will go to a common bus bar and the other side will go to the device being powered such as your steaming light. That wire will be colored. On my boat, that wire...

Re: Oberdorfer N202M-837 will pump cooling water but not A/F

Dave, I replaced my Sherwood with the p/n Z3936 from CatalinaDirect. It's the 1/2" Oberdorfer water pump replacement for the 1/2" Sherwood. I have had no issues with cooling. (BTW, I don't know what "A/F" stands for in the title) Bill C350, #193 Atlanta (Home) / Charleston, SC (B...

Connecting Two Anchor Chains

Hi Gang, I have two 5/16" G42 anchor chains that I want to connect together without that connection point being the "weakest link". I also want it to be able to run it through my windlass without issues. Suggestions and product links appreciated. Thanks, Bill C350, #193 Atlanta (Home)...

Re: New Owner, Lots Of Questions

Hi Greg, Congrats on the new boat! If the survey comes back positive, I think it would be cheaper to hire captain as it would be a straight shot across the Gulf. If you ship, you would have to decommission, pay for the shipping and then recommission. I have never done either one, so keep that in min...

Re: connecting an inverter with 3 batteries

Dave, I'm assuming you have a "stock" alternator with an non-adjustable, internal regulator. That alternator feeds directly in the battery bank. It does not go through the 30 amp Charles battery charger. I don't have the schematic at home, so I can't give you the wires to look for. I think...

Re: Hatch pull ring

Hi Ed, If you are in fresh water, the chrome plated zinc should be fine. If you are in salt water like me, that plating will pit and eventually peel off. Ask me how I know...LOL. The next time I replace one, I hope to find a stainless one. Bill C350, #193 Charleston, SC (Boat) / Atlanta, GA (Home)

Transmission Drain Bolt Crush Washer

Hi All, Like most of you, I have the HBW150A / ZF15MA transmission. I'm looking for a source for the drain bolt crush washer which I believe is copper. I understand that these are unique and can be hard to find. The p/n I found on this forum is 3306301016, but no mention of a source. Thanks, Bill 20...

Re: Weak Transmission from VHF Remote Mic

Gary & Janet, Based on what you described, the problem is with the remote microphone circuitry in the radio, or you have some setting(s) for the remote mic set incorrectly. I'm basing this on the hardwired mic working fine and that you plugged in two identical remote mics and both cause the same...

Re: New Installation

Hi Joe, Please keep us posted on the Velair as I am also looking to replace my Cruisair SXR16. Cruisair was bought out by Dometic years ago. I'm getting mixed reviews on Dometic, but they do have what I think is a direct replacement unit for my old Cruisair. On sale, I can find one for around $2K. T...
