Re: CO Detectors

Hi Ed, I had to get a “soft-start capacitor” installed. I did not actually do the installation myself as I am not that handy. So I don’t know how to guide you through that process. Everything else on the boat has to be off and I did not start the generator on eco-mode. The generator with then start ...

Re: Hot Water Temperature

I had a similar situation of a constant small coolant leak that was very difficult to track down. Lasted for several months. Eventually, had a good diesel mechanic look at it and he suggested that I replace the overflow expansion tank. He thought it had a small crack in it. And he was correct! Solve...

Re: Urgent Question - Boot Stripe

Hi Norm, Just to clarify; are you referring to the strip down at the waterline or the strip up by the rub rail. If the former [at the waterline] I had a bottom job in Jan 2017 and had the strip removed. The bottom job was $1225 [35h @ $35/h] Sanding the bootstrip off $260 [4h @ $65/h] I am in Pensac...

Re: Tracing wiring from alternator to battery

Don't forget to check the external regulator too. I am very much of a novice on all of this and maybe your issue is different, but I was having battery charging issues on the hook. Very slow charging and low amperage I replaced the 2 4-D batteries (not cheap), removed the alternator and had it bench...

Re: Dedicated start battery

All, I want to thank everyone for their valuable thoughts, ideas, and suggestions. A special "shout-out" to Brett Wolfe who called me on the phone to discuss my issue(s). I wanted to now "finish" the story ... My first issue was poor charging of my house batteries after a night o...

Xantrex Link 20 cover

My Xantrex Link 20 plastic cover has broken. I Called Xantrex and looked on eBay and no luck so far with finding one.
Does anyone know where I could find one?
Thanks.

Re: Dedicated start battery

Brett and Rick, Thank you so much. To start I am a novice sailor and have even less knowledge about 12V DC current! I have 2 new 4-D West Marine house batteries. The previous owner ran them together and left the battery switch on BOTH. I asked why and he was 'unsure' and I left them that way. I have...

Dedicated start battery

I am exploring the use of a Dedicated start battery but will not integrate it in to the current house system at this time. I just posted a query on an external jump starter but they do not seem to work yet. So on the short term I think I just want to buy a battery and place it on the boat. Peace of ...

Re: Jump Starter

Ken,
Thank you very much for this link.
Great post by a marine electrician and basically the technology/jumper construction is not there yet to work on big marine batteries and diesel engines.
Thanks again

CO Detectors

Does anyone have a recommendation on a good/great Marine CO detector?
I run my AC off a Honda 2200EU suitcase generator on the swim platform.
I have seen some on West Marine and Defender for about $100/ea
I would prefer a battery only [usually Litium] vs hard wired 12V.
Thanks.

Jump Starter

Still looking for an external jump starter. I have looked at Weego and Noco [by both Defender and West Marine].
Has anyone used one? If so, what CCA/MCCA would you recommend?
What is needed to start the Universal 35M diesel?
Is this 35M motor 6 liter [or less]?
Thanks for any advice.

Re: Anti-siphon valve on engine

I developed a water leak this weekend on the smaller loop at the top of the loop i.e. cap/valve. I saw in this thread the good discussion so I assume this is the vented PSS shaft seal anti-siphon loop. But I could not find out where to get a new cap/rubber valve to replace the leaking one. Also, I d...

Cleaning potable water holding tanks

Does anyone have a good method to clean/rinse out empty potable water tanks [55 gal. forward and 22.5 gallons aft]? We are in Pensacola, Fla. so we do not winterize and the water just stays in the tanks. Is there a commercial rinse product I could use? Or something I could make to put in the tanks, ...

External Jump Starter

I am considering adding a dedicated start battery, but do not have it now. I the meantime I was thinking about getting an external Jump Starter. I currently have the two 4D AGM batteries that are now 4 years old and not holding a charge well, so I will replace these soon. I have seen some external J...

Does anyone have any experience with the new Honda EU2200i generator? Is this powerful enough to start/run the AC as a single unit?
