Re: Should I replace standing rigging

We were in the same situation (I didn't want to say boat :D ) a few years ago with our 2004. I found a reputable, professional rigger and he went up the rig and thoroughly inspected all of the standing rigging, especially the fittings. He reported that all looked great and there was nothing that nee...

Re: Drilling into/mouting to pedestal

I built my own out of Starboard. Beveled wedges go inside the pedestal so the assembly remains level when tightened. Once installed, I plugged the forward ends of the countersunk holes to hide the screw heads. I built a pattern out of plywood to test the fit and to use as a template for the router b...

Re: Marine Elegance Hose routing

George -

I couldn't get that routed easily either and wanted a shutoff for the head fresh water supply anyway so I routed a new line from the cold water manifold directly to the head.

Just another option to consider.

Karl -

I was only able to find them from Catalina directly.

Call their parts dept. They weren't expensive. I bought 3 blanks just in case.

My local locksmith was able to easily make a duplicate key with the blank from Catalina.

Re: Folding the Bimini

Sorry, Chris, I can't attach a picture of any decent size on this forum but the bimini folds against the backstays from the front and back. You may have to raise the boom a bit to allow the front of the bimini to clear it. I usually wrap the straps (that go down to the pulpit seat clips) loosely aro...

Re: Leak at base of main bulkhead

Just a thought on finding the source... I have tracked down a couple of mysterious leaks using newspaper or paper towel taped to different areas above and around the area getting wet. For example, to determine if water is running down the outside of the veneered cabin wall, I would recommend taping ...

This works well on our anchor rode: https://www.defender.com/product.jsp?id=5565534

Other systems out there with whipping line "marks" etc but this way I don't have to remember how many marks have gone out. :D

Re: lifeline replacement

We got all new lifelines in 2017 for the same reason (starting to see some rusting at fittings and wanted to move to uncoated lines for safety). These folks did a wonderful job: https://www.riggingandhardware.com/ in Fairhaven, MA. We dropped off the old lines and picked up the new ones as we're wit...

Re: Replacement 4d batteries and charger?

Another Southport alum here... now in the salty waters of Rhode Island! We have never taken the batteries (4Ds) out during the winters here nor in Wisconsin. I top off the water just before we leave her for the winter and I remove both positive and negative leads from all batteries to make sure we a...

Brown caulk in saloon?

I have just finished cutting and "releasing" the section of the saloon veneer which is problematic on our boats. Ready to use contact cement to re-attach but will need to caulk a bit at the ceiling and sole. Has anybody found a match (or close match) for the brown caulk used by Catalina? A...

Mast bend or no bend?

I was watching some sailing videos on YouTube last night and came across this segment on tuning Selden masts on Catalinas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcCALZ4x6R4 The Selden rep noted that the mast should be bent aft 2-3 inches. When we bought ours, the dealer (who was very experienced selling a...

Would love to see some pics of the table and folding seat that you built. Am planning a mid-sized table myself.

Re: Problems unfurling the Main

Started having problems unfurling the main last season. Tried all of the suggestions here but still difficult to unfurl. We currently have the mainsail at North Sails in Portsmouth, RI for an evaluation. I was anticipating that we needed to have the sail flattened after 14 years of sailing. They fee...

Re: Wheel or below deck autopilot?

We have below deck (i.e. piston on rudder post) drive Raymarine. Works great and doesn't consume 28 amps of power. Unobtrusive and out of the weather. You can "tune" the frequency of correction (from the control head) so it doesn't actuate as often and also conserves even more power. My on...

I also used the Gorilla tape for a year without it coming loose.

Just bit the bullet and got all new acrylic and canvas. Also raised the whole dodger about 4" so I can now see through the dodger instead of having to stand up to see over it.

I like the idea of switching to a K&N filter. Looking at the traditional replacement filter listed on the Catalina Direct website I found that the flange diameter is 1.75". Looking up filters on the K&N website (by dimensions), I found the following filter (K&N RU-2450): https://www...

Re: DC panel wiring

Rick - I'm afraid you may be on the wrong path here. If you bought an LED assembly (i.e. not a bare LED but a ready to be mounted LED indicator) and it is rated at 12 VDC, it will already have a suitable dropping resistor included internally in the assembly. Here's an example one at Newark: http://w...
