Re: What is this pump in my raw water intake hose?

Only guessing as may be non-standard. Safety valve so raw water only “live” when head is turned on, or maybe part of a pump n/pump out timing cycle.

I still have the Newport original head, no valves anywhere.

Re: What is this pump in my raw water intake hose?

Maybe I am getting senile, but this looks like a solenoid valve to me, not a pump??

Re: ENGINE NOISE-DAMPER REPLACEMENT?

Wow, this has been a long posting over a long period of time! I have had the shaft balanced, the motor aligned and mounts replaced, have replaced the damper plate with OEM part, but my engine/transmission/exhaust still rattles at idle, so I don't idle just as Brett suggests. If I drop back into neut...

Re: rattling/grinding noise in gear at higher RPMs

I get a rattle/tapping sound coming largely through the port side aft hull, which comes from the muffler, the one way gate at the entry point (I think) causes it. I have been planing on changing out the lift muffler for years but haven't got around to it. My experience with vibration has been the hu...

Re: winch covers

Look for Oceansouth winch covers, readily available in Australia and Europe so guessing they have sales in the States as well. I have covers to fit both cabin top winches and coaming winches. Only AUD45 on Amazon and that is about USD20 these days!!

Re: Idle RPM Vibration

Hi Chris, Sounds like typical damper plate issue. I had exactly what you describe, kept my idle above 1000 rpm for a few years to get reasonably smooth idle but didn't like crashing it into gear. Now I keep the idle down but pretty much as soon as I get out of gear I increase throttle speed back to ...

Re: Bimini Expansion Panel

Hi Jim, I suspect you will need to have one custom made, ours came with the hardtop dodger and bimini. The dodger has rails to slide the section into, and the bimini has zips to attach. Can't imagine there is anyway to get one off the shelf. Even then I made up extension flaps because water running ...

Curious, does that mean they don't have many left and selling fast, or what they are selling "doesn't last long"??

Re: Cockpit Table Repair

And, as an addendum, if I was actually going to the trouble of building new ones as you appear to be, I would be installing a fiddle, or always use non-slip mats, or both!! Doesn't take much movement to have food or drinks all over the floor with the very hard surface of the table top and no retaini...

Re: Cockpit Table Repair

Hi Evan,

Photos of my 2003 attached, OA length 870 mm, OA width 345 mm, but if I was building one I would make it a bit narrower, maybe 300 mm. A bit less table room but at 345 they nearly overlap the cockpit seats and make getting past the table when leaves are up quite difficult.

Re: Diesel Exhaust Hose R&R

Hi Mike,

I can't tell you how difficult, but I need to do this sometime soon so am very interested in what you find. I recently bandaged the hose between the muffler and discharge port to seal a small split and when I looked it the whole job thought "bloody hell!:

Re: Heat Exchanger Zinc Broken

Hi Steve, I don't know if this is recommended or not, but last time I opened up the hex and reassembled it I had a little weep at the gasket so I took it off and put some aviation gasket goo on it, has been watertight since. It may result in destruction of the gasket next time I take the hex apart t...

I am not a boat builder but have seen damage like this on other boats. They were “crunched” between a jetty and another boat. How far the cracks go and if they have any structural significance - no idea.

Re: Epic sail- C350 flying…

Similarly, early on in my ownership we had a 24 hour charge up the Australian coast with 25+ kts off the rear quarter. 150 genoa and main stayed up and she was very stable and comfortable, steered much more steadily with autopilot than me !, we put down 180 nm in 24 hours, avg 7.5 kts.

Great explanation, thanks David. I "sort" of understood how that circuit worked, but the way you explained it made it much clearer.

Re: Marelon Thru Hull Valves

Totally concur about using Marelon lube on the through hulls. I had routinely stroked the thru hulls on Avalon but they were getting stiffer and stiffer and I was sure sooner or later a handle would just break off so I got some Marelon lube, and while hauled blocked the outlets in succession, poured...

Re: Sold my C34 now looking to buy a 350

Addendum - furling the jib with the electric winch is really easy too, but you need to pay attention to the ease with which the furling drum is rotating, when we bought Avalon the previous owner regularly used the winch so had no "feel" for the system and the drum was pretty much bound up ...

Re: Sold my C34 now looking to buy a 350

Hi Steve, Same sentiment as Kirk, I am in and out of the swim grid lockers more than anywhere else, bumpers, chairs, seats, you name it. Would be a real PITA to have to waste that space, or try and access it through the cockpit lockers - which I couldn't do on my MkI C350 anyway as it has been fitte...
