Most alternators are not able to charge Lithium batteries. Normally you use a DC to DC converter. Here is a demonstration of what could happen:

Re: Refrigerator drain
Mine worked intermittently and then stopped working. I pulled it apart to have a look, a grape stem was lodged in there. Put it back together and all is fine again.

I put mine inline with the keel, under the V-berth bilge access panel.

Re: Winter Canvas vs. Shrink wrap
I have shrink wrapped my boat all but the last 3 years. I did it myself, took my mast down every year and used it as the ridge on the boat for the shrink wrap. Plastic cost me about $120 Cdn per year and then the propane as well. I never had any problems. I bought a cover 3 years ago ~$3400 Cdn, wit...

Re: Mast Removal
I remove my mast every year. The connections are under the board, under the sink in the head. disconnect all of the wires, attach a string or line that gets pulled up the compression tube so you can pull the wires back down the tube when you re-step the mast. I also space any of the connectors and t...

Re: Cat 350 Displacement
We lift every year, we com in between 20000 and 21000 every year. It is way heavier than the specs say. Water tanks empty, waste empty, fuel mostly full, infurling mast, sails off.

Re: Greetings from 'Up North' and thank you to the Forum
Excellent, a couple of Catalina 36s cruise with us every year, and this year we are heading up to the North Channel again. Let us know the dates and we'll try to schedule around them.
Thanks

Welcome guys! Where are you going to moor your boat. We moved from Kincardine, Lake Huron up to Penetanguishene, Georgian Bay last year. If you are in the neighbour we would love to get together.

Re: Bad Head Gasket??
It could be. To test do a leak down test ie . pressurize a cylinder at a time with air and see where the air leaks out. There are several how to videos on you tube.

Re: Replacing sheer stripe/cove stripe tape
Our experience replacing it was that it was a decal type stripe not tape. Applied with soapy water, removed with a heat gun (carefully). You will need 2 rolls of 50' to do both sides.

Re: Standing Rigging Replacement
I have not replaced ours and we have a 2006 commissioned boat. However, I am in freshwater, and I take my mast down every year for winter and inspect it. If you are worried about it, have a competent rigging expert take a look. Some things to look for: corrosion on the cables and fittings, "mea...

Re: Dead Head (But not Grateful)
Yes. When mine did that, I pulled the pump/motor apart. The freshwater pumping portion had rusted solid. I removed the pump part and the motor/macerator spun freely allowing the macerating/flushing portion to work. I have run the head this way for years. We add water as needed using the shower wand.

Re: Solar panel selection
I have 2 130Watt (rigid and fixed to frame over bimini) panels. They are sufficient if the fridge runs just right. If the fridge runs almost 100% of the time at 5 amps all night then my % state of charge is in the 50s to 60s. And if we have a fairly cloudy day the next day, I don't make enough power...

Re: Fresh and sea water to electric toilet
Hi Bill, Not sure how they plumbed the fresh water to your head, but that would seem to be where the risk for contaminating your fresh water tank is. I have heard of people that wanted fresh water for flushing, plumbing in a t-connector to your sink drain, and using the hand washed water for flushin...

I do occasionally use a Prusik hitch to add a snubber on my rode. Seems to work ok.

Re: How to tell what NMEA version I have
Hi Dave, You are probably best to wait to look at the boat to see what you have. That being said there are converters so you can run NMEA 0183 on NMEA 2000 networks. Since you are using Garmin ( I just replaced all of my Raymarine with Garmin) it is easier to use generic devices than the Raymarine p...

If you don't have too much fuel in the tank, you could unscrew the tank level sender at the top, and have a look inside.
